Should You Buy Acne Products from Your Dermatologist?

acne on the face Flickr

Getting started in a medical practice is an expensive proposition. Your dermatologist has to go through four years of college, four years of medical school, and a two- to four-year residency, all the time usually racking up tens or hundreds of thousands or dollars in student loans.

A full-care dermatologist will also have to buy lasers and diagnostic equipment of all kinds, and even set up an operating room, sometimes before seeing even one patient.

It is only natural for dermatologists to look for all the ways possible to earn money during the first 10 years of their careers. But does that mean that you should buy your skin care products from your dermatologist?

Typically, the skin care products a doctor sells are “private label.” This means that the doctor makes an arrangement with a cosmetics or nutritional supplements manufacturer to put the doctor’s label on a generic product.

Private label products are typically good quality, but in no way special. There is nothing in most private label products that cannot be found in products for sale for a lot less at a department store cosmetics counter, and sometimes the quality is not even as good.

The dermatologist’s sales pitch is usually subtle. You might be offered a gift bag when you schedule a follow-up appointment. You might be given discount coupons to see the doctor’s preferred makeover specialist, or given passes for a day spa with a trip to the aesthetician’s office.

There is nothing wrong about accepting products and services that are genuinely free–usually. It is often a good idea to beware products that list “exotic” ingredients. Exotic ingredients such as argan oil may trigger exotic allergies that cause persistent itching skin or perhaps even your first rosacea flare.

There is a lot that it wrong about your doctor writing the name of a cosmetic on a prescription form. That is a blatant ploy to get you to part with your hard-earned dollars for a private label brand. When your dermatologist “prescribes” cosmetics as doctor’s orders, it usually time to see another doctor.

Use caution in buying over-the-counter skin care products from your dermatologist unless the doctor’s products are nationally or internationally known. Dr. Murad’s and Dr. Perricone’s formulas are to be trusted, but never become a guinea pig for an untested line.

How to Deal with Purple Pimples

It’s not a good idea to pop a purple pimple. Flickr

A purple pimple is a uniquely troubling skin care problem. It is bad enough to break out with a nasty red zit the night before the prom or a wedding or a photo shoot, but popping out with purple pimples is even worse.

It is hard to use concealer to cover up red pimples, but it is almost impossible to use concealer to cover up purple pimples. And while it is never a good idea to pop any kind of pimple, but it is an especially bad idea to pop purple pimples.

Should I Pop My Pimples?

Why is it not a good idea to break open the skin to get rid of this kind of blemish? Actually, there are two reasons. If you have kind of a blotch on your skin, it is likely to be a bruise. Opening the skin just involves still more bruising and will make the purple discoloration worse.

If the purple pigment is concentrated in a bump, then it is likely to be clotted blood. The blood clot is not the problem. The problem is what is inside the clot. That is usually Streptococcus (strep) bacteria.

Strep bacteria have an unusual way of hiding themselves from the immune system. They grow in colonies in tissues with a good blood supply, like the skin on your nose or cheeks. They coat themselves with a blood protein known as fibrin, capturing blood they can use as food, while using the resulting blood clot as shield.

If you start poking around with your fingers or a sharp object, you may be able to get rid of your purple pimple, but you can also spread the bacteria all over your face and even into your throat and sinuses.

Can I Take Something To Get Rid Of Purple Pimples?

Just say no to popping purple pimples. It is a lot better to take a supplement like serrapeptase, nattokinase, or mixed proteolytic enzymes to help break up the clot gradually so your immune system can do the work. It also helps to use products that contain the herbs calendula or tea tree oil, although benzoyl peroxide won’t work.

Letting your immune system take care of the blemish can take a week or so. In the meantime, you can make the pimple less noticeable by using a single layer of foundation makeup, but avoid the use of green makeup since you won’t be covering a red pimple.

What Really Causes Chest Acne?

Adults and teenagers alike suffer from a skin infection called chest acne. In fact, it affects people between the ages of 11 and 40. However, more women than men are bothered by this condition.

The root cause of chest acne is still unknown. But, there are several factors that influence its growth. This includes hormonal changes, personal hygiene, stress, diet and many more.

Often, acne occurs in both men and women because of changes in the hormonal levels in the body. The hormone called testosterone or androgen, which is increased in teenagers, is the main cause of acne spurt in adolescence stage. This is also the main reason why women get acne outbreaks before their monthly period, during pregnancy, even during menopausal stage.

Several other factors that affect the growth of chest acne include:

1. Heredity- Research showed that acne has familial tendencies. This means men and women who have a family history of chest acne have greater possibility to acquire the skin condition.

2. Diet- Although foods are not the main cause of acne, some may actually promote the growth or worsen the condition. These include foods with trans-fat or saturated fats, as well as sodium or iodine-rich foods. Following a strict acne diet can certainly help get rid of chest acne.

3. Personal Hygiene- Poor personal hygiene can greatly cause chest acne. Sweat, dirt and dead skin cells combined with sebum or oil attracts the bacteria that cause the skin infection called acne. Touching the pimples frequently can also make them worse.

4. Skin Care Products- Oil-based cosmetics clog the pores and trap dirt and dead skin cells. This results to chest acne. Other products such as body sprays, deodorants, hair sprays, moisturizers and sunscreens also worsen the acne on the back and chest.

5. Stress- Emotional and physical stress may contribute to chest acne. Research says certain hormones are increased when under stress. This increases the release of sebum in the body. Thus, more acne develops.

6. Environment- Repeated exposure to polluted air, oils and greases, as well as sweating in humid weather can worsen acne. This is the time when proper personal hygiene is important. If the person regularly cleanses the skin, oil and dirt will not build up. Otherwise, the acne condition may aggravate.
