The Oil Cleansing Method for Beautiful Skin

As more women (and men) now realize that most commercial skin care products actually contain ingredients that are harmful to the skin, there is a growing movement towards skin care methods that are natural and organic.

Scan the ingredients list of a typical skin product and you will likely see silicones, dimethicone, bismuth, parabens, and other substances which can actually aggravate skin irritations and other problems. To this end, the oil cleansing method has several advantages.

Pure oils such as Argan Oil can provide your skin many healthy benefits.

The Benefits of Oils

Slathering oils to clean the skin may seem paradoxical at first glance, especially since most cleansers tout oil-clearing abilities as one of their major selling points.

And yet, chemistry teaches us that “like dissolves like”.

By using oil to lift up oil residues on the face, the skin is spared from the harsh and drying effects of chemical cleansers.

Dermatologists explain that using products that strip the skin of its natural oils is not really such an effective way of controlling excessive sebum production. When the skin gets too dry (albeit artificially), it responds by producing even more oil.

This is why even oily skin types need to use moisturizers. On the other hand, because the oil cleaning method keeps the skin well-moisturized, those who do this on a regular basis have noted a marked improvement in oil production.

As a result, most skin issues such as pimples, acnes and comedones have also improved.

The Ingredients

To do the oil cleansing method, you need nothing more than two kinds of essential oils, a cleansing oil and a carrier oil.

The cleansing oil is castor oil, which has been noted for its antibacterial and purging abilities. It may seem ironic but castor oil is actually too drying to the skin in its undiluted form, which is why it needs to be mixed with a carrier oil.

You can choose any type of essential oil such as olive, almond, argan oil or sunflower oil. Pick something which you know to be compatible for your skin. Some individuals have reported pore clogging with olive oil. If this is the case, sunflower oil may be a better option.  You may even want to check out the Bio Oil brand.

The Procedure

You need to determine which oil mixture would be best for your skin. Take note that the goal is to arrive at a good ratio of the castor oil and carrier oil.

As explained, castor oil is drying so the less oily you are, the less you need. For normal skin, a 1:4 ratio is a good place to start. For oily skin, you can probably use 1:2.

With clean hands, smear the oil mixture onto your face. If you wear makeup, there is no need to wash your face beforehand as the oil will do a perfect job of removing even oil-based waterproof makeup (oil dissolves oil remember).

Gently massage the oil into the skin so that it gets well-absorbed. Let it sit for about five minutes to seep better into the pores where the dirt is.

Dip a soft cloth into warm water (the hottest that you can stand) and wring it out. Use the cloth to gently wipe off all the dirt and makeup off your face paying particular attention to areas where you tend to have clogged pores or dry patches.  Rinse the cloth well and repeat.

If you find your skin feeling too tight afterwards, lightly moisturize with a few drops of carrier oil. In the morning, all you need to do is run a warm washcloth over your face before putting on makeup.
